Remeber you can pick up points still by doing all 4 local Parkruns – Albert Park, Stewart’s Park, Tees Barrage and Locke Park Redcar. So its your 4 best parkruns this year as part of your 15 races to count.
The results are based on the WMA Age-grading calculator. See http://www.howardgrubb.co.uk/athletics/wmalookup06.html

Runner of the Month
A lot of people are running well due to consistent training and good club sessions but for me one person has stood out as I’ve looked through the results over the last month or so and that’s Alasdair Tatham. Alasdair has had some top results in his last few races, 2nd at Richmond 10K, 12th at York marathon, 5th at Guy Fawkes 10 mile& 3rd at Maltby 7 road race. What’s the secret? It’s no secret, consistency and time to training he tells me. Well done Alasdair.
Also worthy of a mention is Paul Bainbridge for breaking his pb at Scarborough 10K in very windy conditions, Ken Farrell for setting a new M60 club record for 10 miles and the rest of the marathon runners – Jonathon, Martin, Marc, Barry, Catherine, Jayne & Iain. Not forgetting Lucy Clough who in the spring ran 10 marathons in 10 days.
Derwentwater 10 race report – 3rd October by Paul McGough
As I was missing the Scarborough 10K due to being at Centre Parcs with the family for the weekend I looked for a race near the lakes and the Derwentwater 10 mile road race came up. I’d done it in 2008 with a few other club members and remember it very well but for the wrong reasons unfortunately – I set off too fast and paid for it half way round when I got to the big hill!
The course is undulating navigating the lake with a big climb at 5 miles. It’s very scenic with great views and a nice midday start time.
This time round I paced myself well through the first few miles and felt good at 5 miles when I got to the climb. It starts quite steeply which is tough but when the gradient eased off I picked up the pace and also started picking off runners. This continued until the end and I was pleased to get under 64 minutes on what is a fairly tough course.
It’s quite far to travel to a race but if you can make a weekend of it as I did it’s a race well worth doing.

Marathon training
In December I will be starting a marathon training program aiming to compete in the Manchester marathon on Sunday 6th April. I have put together a 16 week training program as first devised by Peter Conner for Tom Gibbons and also used by Wayne Bouttell. It has been modified slightly over the years but still has the back bone in of a marathon training program – long run on a weekend, mile reps, target races, etc.
I would be more than happy to for anyone to join me. Currently Mark Brown and Lucy Clough have signed up to Manchester and I’ve had interest from quite a few others. Wayne Bouttell and Jonathan Skidmore are hoping to get into London marathon which is a week later and Richard Fawcett has signed up for Edinburgh marathon at the end of May.
Personally I chose Manchester as it is easy to get into and fairly early on in the year. London albeit a great marathon is an expensive do and for me has a lot of pressure attached to it.
An early marathon means they’ll be a lot of running in the dark, cold and rain but aiming for that target will keep me motivated throughout the winter months and when it comes to summer I’ll hopefully have the marathon done and dusted and also have a very high level of fitness to take into the summer races.
I’m hoping to incorporate some of the marathon speed / strength session into the Tuesday and Thursday night nymac club session.
A typical pacing session will be:
1 mile minimum jog warm up, then 5 x 1 mile or 1600m at 10K pace or 6 min’s (based on marathon target time of 3 hour) fast, with 400m (2-min) jog recoveries, then 1 mile jog cool down.
Some long runs will be done at marathon pace. Such as:
18 miles in approx 2 hrs 14 – first 9 miles easy in 72 minutes, last 9 mile at marathon pace in 62 minutes. This is based on a marathon target time of 3 hours.

Strava
Have you joined Strava? If not, why not? We now have over 20 club members part of Strava and members of the nymac Strava club as seen on the club website. If anything it's a great motivational tool to get you out and get yourself climbing up the league. As well as using a GPS watch such as a Garmin you can also use a Smartphone to join and record runs.
