Or The Sessay Swift 6k, Wednesday August 20
I only found out about this race when my regular squash opponent told me we couldn't play because he was running at Sessay. So I googled the name and found this race, organised by the Thirsk & Sowerby Club, starting in the village of Sessay, about 25 miles away from home down the A19. as ever this year with all the races I've done, it doesn't feature in the Club Championships but I thought 6k sounded like a good distance for a midweek event so entered on the night. It attracted a quite different group of runners from the usual Teesside crowd, most of the others were from the home Club but Harrogate, Knaresborough, York , Bedale & Ripon were all well represented amongst the just over 100 starters. The only face I recognised was Billingham's Mike Jefferies.
The course is one lap rond flat countryside with good views of the hills and White Horse. I soon settled down to my usual speed and was imagining being able to claim a Club Allcomers 6k record when I was overtaken by Jon Skidmore, pushing a buggy. That put things in perspective and from there on, I freewheeled, finishing in 42nd in a time of 25mins 9seconds. Jon took 19th place in 23mins 6seconds in a race won by Mike Jefferies in 19mins 40secs.
In summary, this is a very attractive race, well organised with a flat course, not too far from Teesside, well worth the trip. We would both be happy to race here again and would recommend it to any other NYMAC members looking for something to do on a Wednesday night in August.
