Cross Country & Fell Annual Review 2023-24

Been wanting to get this out for a while, just waiting on the last official results of the Fell Championships (Heartbeat Hobble). Firstly, I would just like to thank all the runners who took part in both the cross country season and the fells races that have taken place across the year.

Cross Country

The six races, which took place at the usual venues, was on the whole well attended by NYMAC. We had a total of 42 runners take part with our biggest turn out on the opening day, at Acklam Grange, where we had 23 runners in total. As always, it would be great to get a more consistent turn out from you all and achieve both a mens(6) and ladies(4) team in each race which unfortunately we didn’t manage to do this year.

Ultimately, the Middlesbrough Half Marathon had an effect on the mens team result and a few individuals. As runners pounded the pavements of Middlesbrough, a poor turn out at Richmond meant the mens team fell out of the top 3, unable to get a team out. Anne Robson dropped to 2nd place in the F65 and Richard Atkins slipped off the podium in the M40 category.

We did have some winners though – Laurence Taylor made sure he clinched M65 top spot as did Dave Hughes in the M60 on the last race of the season at Richmond. Carolyn Gale achieved 2nd in the F70 category.

Laurence, Dave and Carolyn:

Well done to everyone who took part and look forward to seeing you next year!

NYSD Cross Country Results:

This year, we made sure our championship fell inline with the clubs membership, so a couple of races from last year were included in this years. A total of 25 races make up the 23-24 championship which took place across the North York Moors and beyond. This included 3 from the 22-23 Winter series, 13 from the ’23 summer series and 9 from the 23-24 Winter series.

A full race calendar wasn’t able to be fulfilled with 4 cancelled races and only 1 of them being rearranged. Across all races we have a total of 53 runners hitting the trails, with our best attended race being on New Years Day in the Captain Cooks Fell Race. 16 of you decided to bring in the new year in style. We had NYMAC runners in all but one of the races which is a great club achievement.

Again we had some success stories in the ’23 Summer Series with Alison Lloyd claiming top spot in the F60 category and a NYMAC 1-2 in the M60, with Dave Hughes pipping Nigel Briggs to claim the title.

Dave, Nigel and Alison:

Well done to all runners who ran but the fell calendar doesn’t stop, the 23-24 Winter series is in full flow and continues with Blakely Blitz on 7th April. I look forward to handing out the trophies for our Club Winners at the AGM. Best of luck to all of you who take part next year!

Thanks Tom
