Middlesbrough & Cleveland Harriers regain their Crown at the NYMAC relays.

Another fantastic night at Stewart Park for the North York Moors AC Tom Wall relays. More than 500 runners and athletic supporters descended on the park were the ever popular event sees four runners in a team, each running one leg of one mile.

As expected the main events, male and female open, where contested by Middlesbrough AC, Richmond & Zetland Harriers and Middlesbrough & Cleveland Harriers. In the men’s event Middlesbrough & Cleveland’s Greg Jayasuriya got off to a flying start reaching the half mile marker in 2 minutes and 9 seconds, 20 metres ahead of Middlesbrough AC’s Ben Bergstrand who was very closely followed by Loftus and Whitby athlete James Wilson but it was Greg who handed over the baton first, recording the fastest leg time of the night in 4 minutes and 34 seconds for the difficult twisting and undulating mile while leading his team to overall victory by a margin of 11 seconds.

In the ladies open race this was a 3 way tussle between Middlesbrough AC, Darlington Harriers and Richmond & Zetland Harriers with just 8 seconds separating the 3 teams at the finish line with Middlesbrough AC’s girls proving victorious for the second time in a row just pipping Darlington Harriers ladies by 1 second.

Host club North York Moors AC took first place in the men’s M200 category were the total ages of the 4 runners must add up to a minimum of 200 years, the club have now won this event category 11 times out of 11. Clubs from as far afield as Sunderland and Whitby came with M200 runners but again failed to wrestle the trophy from North York Moors proving them to be ‘top dogs’ in veteran running. In the Female 160 category the Loftus and Whitby were well over a minute in front of the second team North York Moors AC and in the mixed team category Darlington Harriers took the honours again pushing the North York Moors AC into second place.

A special prize was also awarded to team ‘Toms Vets’ team number 223 for what the race director thought was best ‘team effort of the night’ given the fact that every member of the team was over 80 of age they earned it.

North York Moors AC hold their next relay event at Stewart Park on May the 28th 2020
