Maltby
8th Nov 2009

Jim climbs the final hill (photo by Jon Parker)
"We had a great turn out at this years Maltby 7 road race, 22 club members took part in this well established popular run. The weather was perfect for the race low wind and cool temperatures. The course is an undulating county road run around the Maltby Seamer area and with an 11 oclock start the roads are still nice and quite. At #8.50 for club members its also excellent value for money with a t-shirt and drink included in a goody bag.
The race was won by Stephen Hepples (N&E B) a Maltby 7 regular in 36:40. For the second year running our very own Jim Bulman finished in 2nd place in a time of 38:07. Dave Wilson continued his good form and won Male 40 in a time of 41:26. Brian Roberts had a great race and finished 2nd Male 50 in a time of 41:42.
For the ladies Carolyn Summersgill (M&C) fresh back from injury gained another victory in 42:39, Marie Stansmore took 2nd place and 1st Female 35 in a time of 44:10.
See you at the Thirsk 10

Toronto Trot
27th Sept 2009
Ken's another one of our globe trotting members who knows how to enjoy a proper holiday.....

Ken waits patiently for the outdoor showers to build up some pressure....
We travelled to Toronto on the Wednesday and after an 8 hour flight arrived at our Hotel the Westin Harbour on the shores of Lake Ontario late afternoon (Toronto time). Our room on the 32nd floor had fantastic views of the lake and the CN tower. They call it a lake although its about 200 miles long!
The Toronto Waterfront Marathon was an 07:30 start on a warm overcast morning. The full marathon race has 3,000 runners and the half marathon which sets off at the same time about 8,000 with a further 4,000 joining in the 5k run walk which starts a couple of hours later. The route was advertised as fast and flat and some of it was scenic and quite pleasant to run through however some was a little on the industrial side. The crowds were enthusiastic in places but like most marathon routes there were the lonely, quiet stretches. The crowds all seemed to shout the same things i.e. "Awesome", "Come on youre looking good" and whooping like only Canadians and Americans can. There was some good banter from the crowds when they shout your name which is pre printed under your number.
All went to plan for the first 38k but then I struggled (my excuse is I ran in The Great North Run the Sunday before). however despite struggling I enjoyed the last few kilometres running back through the centre of Toronto waving and shouting back at the crowds, they seemed to think that because I had NYM on my vest that it stood for New York so I had fun pointing at it and shouting back North York Moors! However I suppose they were none the wiser.
The race was won by a Kenyan Kenneth Mungare in 2:08, a record on Canadian soil and the Women's race was won by an Ethopian Amana Gobena in 2:28. I was a little behind them finishing in 3.35.
The race was well organised and very friendly, there's a good medal and T-shirt and the hotel was pretty good too, but its one which I wont be doing again.
Regards Ken Farrell

GNR
20th Sept 2009
Jim, Mike, Nat & Wayne (photos courtesy of Robin Rutherford)
Conditions looked perfect as myself, Jim Bulman, Jims mate Mitch, Peter Conner and his mate Jim headed down the motorway to Newcastle. After a near miss on a roundabout, strategically timed by Peter to get the adrenalin flowing before the race we arrived at Gosforth with plenty of time to spare.
Jim and myself both had fast paced club runner numbers to get a decent start, but we decided to join Gordon Ramsey and the like to make sure we got on television. Nathanial Williams was on the other side of the duel carriageway rubbing shoulders with Martin Lel so all-in-all, it was an excellent day for the NYM Promotional Dept.
Jim went off like it was a 400m race and that was the last I saw of him but I ran my own race and did a PB of 71.34. My old PB was 75.16 so to say I was satisfied is an understatement. Jim also had a blinder coming 35th in 70.12 his fastest time in a proper half-marathon. He has done a sub-70, but apparently the course was measured by a sheep. Nathanial was disappointed with his run of 73.02 but still had the grace to shout encouragement to Jim and myself as we overtook. He still came top 50 as well so thats three North York Moors runners in the top 50 out of 50-odd thousand.
At the finish Jim, Mitch and myself felt sick and exhausted, unable to contemplate a cool-down. Luckily, Peter Conner had anticipated this and parked the car in a secret location a number of miles away from the finish, forcing us on a long walk in search of the car. Im sure this reduced the level of DOMS suffered the following day (it almost reduced Mitch to tears).
Other North York Moors members at the race (where known) were Gary Barnes (86.35), Wayne Boutell (88:41), Mark Potter (93:23), Ken Farrell (95:44), Chris Nixon (95:57), Waleed Al-Shaghana (1:47:53), Bob Howe (his 29th i.e. all of them !, 1:52:46), Ian Whitehead (2:03:52), Stephen Guest (2:10:45), and Karen Keen (3:17:26). If I've missed anyone off please e-mail rob@nym.ac

This was my 24th GNR and probably one of my most painful races. I had a basic target of 5 miles in 32 mins, 10m in 64 mins and then hang on to finish in 20/21 mins. I set off well after standing around in the start area for an hour, 6:28 first mile, then caught Wayne Boutell just before 2 miles, a brief chat before I headed off. Hit 5 miles in 31:58 i.e. spot on before the 3 mile speedy descent into Jarrow. By 8 miles the heat was starting to get to me a little and the climb up to 10 miles was a little painful.I reached 10 miles in 64.30 i.e. a little off target so attempted to speed up but there was nothing left in the legs so it was a case off hanging on to the end.
I crossed the line in 86.34, completing my 74th half-marathon, totally spent. After taking a week off I have started back running now, the will is still there and the spirit still intact so I`ll be back next year.

"A beautiful sunny Sunday morning, ideal conditions I thought for a good time! However, it did seem very warm in the un-shaded parts of the course once the race was underway (must get my excuses in early!)
This was only my 2nd 10km race ever, the previous outing was at the Middlesbrough 10km in 2008 (42mins). So it was difficult to judge how well I would do here at Darlo. My 5km times have been pretty consistent, as I am a regular competitor in The Albert Park time Trial on Saturdays. Also my training had been going quite well with regular quality sessions with the club on Tuesday nights, plus lunch time runs most days with Rob Pollard (when he is fit!!!). Before the race I said to my wife that I would be happy with a time around the low 40 mins mark, so set my Garmin for a 4min/km pace.
The race started almost on time, with the usual funnel across the starting mats. After the initial crush the field spread across the open road and out of the town centre. The roads were all adequately marshalled and the km markers all in exactly the right places.
Martin Murray, before the race, had pre-warned me that there was a slight hill at around 3km and as the course was 2 loops it would catch me twice! Thanks for the advice Martin. A water station was positioned just after the hill climb and was a welcome relief, especially on the 2nd loop.
I felt strong through the 1st half of the race and the slight hill didnt slow my pace too much. Between the 7th and 8th km, my pace had started to slow, and my mind started to wander. But after the tremendous support of the spectators on the run in and a Keep it Going, your looking strong by Trevor, I managed to pick the pace back up and ran across the finish line in 42:13. Not world beating or a PB, but I was pleased.
I will definitely do this race again next year, it was really well organised, marshalled throughout the course and all the signs were in the right places. Plus I thought Parking in Darlington would have been a nightmare, but I had no problems finding a space and getting back out again was a doddle.
Well done to every NYMAC runner who attended the race especially Jim Bulman for his 2nd Place (32:20), Mike Jeffries (33:12), Jonathan Skidmore (35:23), Gareth Wilson (36:28), Martin Murray (37:10), Paul McGough (38:31), Wayne Bouttell (39:53), Julian Barwick (42:01), Eddie Meehan (43:44), John Stapleton (46:11), Lee Baines (49:12), Michael Mahon (49:17), Anne Robson (59:06). If I missed anyone, sorry but just let Rob know and he will update the site.
Role on the The Billingham 10km on the 23rd August, at least I have a target time to aim for now."
Steve Guest
P.S. Jim was nearly disqualified on Sunday, due to one of his mates cycling along side him during the race. The race official gave him a stern talking too. Jim said at one point he had three bikes alongside him, Peter Connor, Trevor and Jim's mate!

Honeymoon Half
26th July 2009
Jon recently had a dream honeymoon - why
? Because it involved running of course.....
"Ever since I started running I have always wanted to race abroad. I recently got married in New York on 20th July and as part of our honeymoon we did a mini multi stop tour of the United States. From New York we then went on to San Francisco in California and then on to Las Vegas in Nevada. A few months before we departed, out of curiosity more than anything, I checked out the race fixtures in those three locations to see if there were any races happening while we were there. Unfortunately I had just missed out on the 135mile Death Valley race in Nevada that Sharon Gayter did on the 13th July, never mind I may have to leave that one till next year!!!!!!! (more)

Northumberland Coastal Run
12th July 2009
"Where is he? Where is he? Cant see him. Is this him? No. Come on, come on. Skiddy where are you?
I gather this was something like the conversation between Mr Bulman and Mr Lowe after they crossed the finish line at the Northumberland Coastal Run.
Meanwhile Mr Skidmore is having a battle with a Morpeth runner and needs to stay in front of him. His inner conscience tells him to get a move on.
6 minutes later Jim and Paul are still tense, but do they have the team prize?
8 North York Moors AC runners took part in this race. Its around 14 miles from Beadnall to Alnmouth, a linear run that begins on the beach at Beadnall and takes in lots of sand, water and coastal paths.
The race lines up for the start across the beach. The tide is out and there is plenty of room. Its a long line of runners stretched from the sea to the dunes and dense with people. Around 1000 runners are lined up. Theres a few rocks to dodge on the beach and plenty of saltwater pools. These are successfully dodged for around 100m, then its time to give up and get wet feet. I didnt know my trainers were so heavy when wet!
After a mile and a half its across the really soft sand and onto the coastal path which is twisty and turny and surprisingly has quite a few ups for a coastal path. Its then back on the beach for another couple of miles before Dunstanborough Castle comes in sight. We are on coastal paths again and its getting tough.
A section on road gives way to the final part, again on the beach and is time to find that balance of not being on the really soft stuff and not getting too wet. A sign indicates 2 miles to go. A conversation going on behind me reckons its only a mile and a half. We get to the headland and turn the corner to see the finishsomewherevaguely in the distance.
It seems to take forever running on the sand and a head wind catches us, trying to finish us off.
I eventually cross the finish and see Jim, Paul and Jonathan looking nervous.
We attend the prize giving and gather up a few prizes.
..Yes Jim, Paul and Jonathan did manage 1st men's team, but not by much.
If you have not done this run before, its beautiful. Its got great views and is virtually traffic free for its 14 miles. Make sure you enter next year. I advise early entry (like Jan / Feb time) as this race now fills up extremely quickly and is very popular. "

Coast Road Canter
24th June 2009
We had a great turn out in the New Marske Harriers Summer 5k, 21
club members took part in this well established fast flat two lap race. The weather during the day had been very warm and sunny. However as the evening drew in the sky clouded over and the temperature dropped to near perfect race conditions.
Jon Skidmore (17:06) not far off his PB was first home for NYMAC in 9th place overall, he turned in a really quick performance only just being piped to the line by the 1st lady, Middlesbroughs Carolyn Summersgill.
Just behind was Dean Moore (17:21) in 10th place, he managed to put his disappointment of Sundays Newton Aycliffe 10k behind him. Paul McGough (17.44) continued where he left off at the Newton Aycliffe 10k to set yet another PB, this time knocking 1min 19seconds off his previous best for a 5k. After the disappointment of having to pull out of the London Marathon back in April due to a back injury its good to see he has more than fully recovered and put all that hard training over the winter months to good use.
No local race would be complete with out a bit of in house competition and this race was no different. Club members Paul McGough, Martin Murray (17:49), Nick Simmons (17:50) & Jon Parker (17:55) were grouped together for pretty much most of the race all battling for position. Paul managing to hold on to the gap he created at 2k mark and came out on top, the race ended with Nick & Jon also getting PBs.
Sharon Gayter (20:26) was first woman for NYMAC and 7th woman overall, other NYMAC ladies were Jayne Parkin (20:45), Diane Jobson (21:16) & Kath Blakey (21:20).
Both Mens & Womens teams came 2nd to New Marske Harriers who came 1st in both Team categories.

Newton Aycliffe 10K
21st June 2009

NYMAC had 11 runners representing the club in the latest Club target road race at the Newton Aycliffe 10k. A record number of runners, 374 turned out to race on a warm humid day. Jim Bulman (32:28) was first home for NYMAC and 2nd place overall with Paul Lowe (32:57- club M40 record) just behind him in 3rd place winning the Male Vet prize in the process. Paul McGough (37:18) turned in the performance of the day smashing his PB by over a minute & a half, this all done on what is a quite a tough 3 lap course. Marie Stansmore was our first lady home and 3rd lady overall in a new club record of 38:47!

Raby Castlers
24th
May 2009

It was a rare warm and sunny Bank Holiday Sunday that provided the weather for the Raby Castle 10k race. The scenery for a 10k race was probably as good youre going to get, as running past the backdrop of a castle is fairly unique for any race. Not that you will notice the views of the castle and its grounds while racing but Im sure the spectators appreciated them a lot more. I had never entered this race before but Id heard from a few people that the main thing that kept them coming back was the scenic route.
The course itself is a 2 lap undulating route with the majority being on tarmac and a small section through the woods, this being especially challenging on account of it being a hot sunny day. The earlier 5K race was one lap of the same route.
North York Moors had 9 runners representing the club in the 10K race, Chris Dunne (36:10) was first home in 7th Place overall, followed by myself Jon Parker (38:41) David Wilson (38:47) and Marie Stansmore (38:52). Marie, Dave & myself were close together from the word go with Dave leading the way up until the 9k mark. Marie had another good run and continued her current good form. Unfortunately for Marie and NYMAC, Sarah Tunstall of Kendal AC turned up and claimed the 1st placed womans prize, finishing 5th overall in a very impressive time of 35:54. Other North York Moors runners on the day were Chris Wright (43:10), then our very own Ladys Manager Diane Jobson (46:20) closely followed by Dave Williams (46:53), Adam Taylor (48:10) and Viv Mathews (52:31). Terry Wall of Morpeth Harriers won the race in 33:58.
All in all it was good race on a challenging course. Dont expect to get a PB but what you will get are fantastic views and free entry to the castle grounds.

Only 3 reports this year :
"The London Marathon wasn't the first thing that crossed my mind when I was laid flat-out on the moors waiting for help after breaking my arm in the Wheeldale Tandem in January. However it was the 2nd question that I asked the doctor in A&E! Any chance of running it? ...... No chance he said!
Anyway after finally getting the OK to run, with just 10 weeks to get ready, I made the starting line. All I asked for was for cool weather, but it turned out to be very hot..... (more)

Ladies Report:
The New Marske Harriers Spring Coast Road 5K was an extremely fast race and was won by a very quick under 20 female from Shildon, Kate Avery in 16:13 (4th overall). Marie Stansmore was seen as a flash of orange in those bright racing shoes and finished a very respectable 7th in 18:51 (club record for 5k). Following not far behind were Jayne Parkin (20:18) and Sharon Gaytor (20:12 - bettering her own club record for the F40 category).

Apr 2009
Not surprisingly I was the only NYMAC runner in the Bolton 10K. I have completed this race the last few years as an excuse to get out of the house whilst visiting the mother-in-law in nearby Darwen. However this year she got the better of me as she decided to go on holiday to Cyprus and leave an empty house!
The race has around 200ft of climb and the start point had been changed this year to move it off the main road and onto a track in Leverhulme Park. The finish is around the running track within the park and this year saw chip timing for the first time.
A large field of over 500 assembled at the early start time of 9am. Early entry has been required the last three years with the race filling up in the run up to race day. The weather was kind with bright sunshine and just a gentle breeze around the course.
The biggest climb came around 6K and after this point there are some significant downhill stretches before a flat section leading to the running track.
The race was won in impressive style by Anthony Valentine of Bolton United Harriers who was over 2mins ahead of the 2nd placed runner. Being from Blackburn it always feels good taking on the locals and I managed a pleasing 15th position, picking up 1st O40 prize (a first!). Things were put into perspective though when I realised that the chap who out sprinted me in the finish was in the O55 category and the chap breathing down my neck was in the O60 category!

An impressive thirty-two runners from North York Moors AC turned out for the 27th Redcar half Marathon. Our first runner home was Jim Bulman (1:10:32) in 5th place (
and first local runner). He achieved his 2nd fastest half Marathon time. The next two runners were Jon Skidmore (1:17:46), who has been tapering for this race this since Middlesbrough 10k 2008, and Dean Moore (1:20:30) both set PBs. Well done to these three runners for winning the mens team prize.
Jon Parker (1:23:08) beat Alex Peacock (1:24:39) again! Tom Gibbons (1:27:01) set another PB this year. Well done to Peter Wilkinson (1:33:55) taking nearly 7minutes of his PB.
Diane Jobson (1:32:13) was our first lady home followed by Jayne Parkin (1:33:26) and Sharon Gayter (1:39:50). The women managed 4th overall in the team event.
Kenya's Joyce Kandie and Joice Kirui were an impressive 7th and 11th overall in 1:13:23 and 1:15:33 in the Ladies race.
Well done to everyone else who took part.

Mermaids by the Sea
10th Apr 2009
North York Moors had an amazing 23 runners competing in the annual Good Friday Mermaid 10k Road Race at Marske. Unlike last years event weather conditions were a lot kinder with only a little bit of a head wind coming off the North Sea, unfortunately for the runners that head wind was most notable in the final 3k of the race.
Jim Bulman (32:18) was first runner home for NYMAC just 6 seconds behind race winner Dominic Shaw of New Marske Harriers (well it is their home turf). Jim managed to finish just ahead of club team mate Paul Lowe (32:29), maybe Jim was getting his own back a little bit after the Middlesbrough 5k the other week. 1 1 in the Lowe v Bulman rivalry.
Marie Stansmore (39:23 - club record) was 2nd women home behind race favourite Middlesbrough & Clevelands Carolyn Summersgill. Marie was just 1 of 6 women racing in North York Moors AC colours and along with Marie, Jayne Parkin (42:36) & Dianne Jobson (43:39) helped win 2nd place in the Womens Team Prize. In the Mens Team event North York Moors scooped the 2nd team prize just narrowly missing out on 1st prize, well done to Jim Bulman, Paul Lowe & Jon Skidmore (35:11).
It was a great turn out for North York Moors with a few known PBs set along the way by Alex Peacock (38:28) and Tom Gibbons (39:19) proving that those tough sessions on a Tuesday & Thursday Club training nights are starting to pay off. (Apologies if anyone else set a PB please contact Rob to add your name to the list).

Tees Pride 5k
29th Mar 2009

It was a typical spring morning that provided the weather for the first and soon to become annual 5k road race through the streets of Middlesbrough. Sunny blue sky and a slight chill in the air made the weather near enough perfect for running. 857 runners took to the streets in this event that is sure to grow and grow similar to how its older brother the Middlesbrough Tees Pride 10k race has done in recent years.
The race starts and finishes outside the Town Hall on Albert Road and the route takes in iconic landmarks such as the Transporter Bridge, St Hildas Clock, Middlesbrough College and the Riverside stadium.
North York Moors had 8 runners competing on the day although the official results show only 7. Unfortunately our only woman runner Claire Lowe forgot to put on her race chip so doesnt appear in the official results. Paul Lowe was first home for NYMAC in 9th overall with a time 15.33 setting a new club M40 5k record. Paul managed to hold off Jim Bulman in what is yet again becoming a healthy club race rivalry.
North York Moors Results:
9th Paul Lowe (MOPEN) - chip time 15:33
13th Jim Bulman (MOPEN) - chip time 15:55
16th - Dean Moore (MOPEN) - chip time 17:06
75th Eddie Meehan (M55) - chip time 20:07
88th Lee Baines (MOPEN) - chip time 20:42
122nd Adam Taylor (MOPEN) - chip time 21:27
272nd Michael Mahon (M60) chip time 24:29
The overall 5k race was won by Rob Whittle in 14:47.
The day also featured an elite mile race for both men & women. The elite mile was won by New Marske Harrier's Ricky Stevenson in a very quick time of 4:08. In the women's event Susan Scott representing Scotland was first home in a time of 4:46.

Strictly Come Running

Tom & Jon hang back and wait for the leaders go the wrong way....
Jon Parker and I travelled across to the small village of Little Strickland, Cumbria for their second annual 10 mile road race. Neither Jon or myself had competed in this race before and had little idea of what to expect. We left a crisp sunny day in Teesside to arrive at a windy snow blizzard in Cumbria. Once we made the joint decision to get out of the warmth of the car, we made our way to the village hall only to find that there was no race
route to be seen. We only knew where the start was (1/2 a mile away) because Jon's dad had passed it on his way over. The start was on a down-hill slope of a thin track and we both agreed this was an ideal place to pick up an injury, although luckily neither of us did.
The race itself contained a number of steady climbs and seemed to follow a figure of 8 with lots of disorientating turns. The strong side winds and snow/hail did not help either. I lost my race number half way round and Jon's was barely clinging on to his vest by the end of the race. Added to this, the course was not organised well at all. There were no mile markers (not even at half way) and not many stewards, but even that wasn't the biggest problem for the leading group of 5 runners (photo) who ended up being led the wrong way by the race car! We later discovered that the car had driven the leading group back on course, but by then it was far too late for them to make up the ground they'd lost. Luckily Jon was in the group behind the leaders (which then became the leading group) and as I was desperately following this we both managed to avoid getting lost.
Overall, this could be an enjoyable event if it weren't for the poor organisation. I'd recommend it if your looking for a challenging, fairly hilly 10 mile road race, but be prepared to get lost, especially if your in the leading group!

Huddersfield 10K
22nd Feb 2009
Tom Gibbons & myself made the hour and a bit journey down to Huddersfield to have a bash at their annual 10k road race. This was the 4th time I had done this race but for Tom it was his first. Anyone who hasn't done this race its safe to say its probably one of the toughest & hilliest 10k's around. The only flat section of the race is the last 200 metres and by that time your legs are like jelly after all the climbs & fast downhill's.
Tom had previously done the Richmond 10k, a race he had down for being the hardest 10k he'd done, needless to say he has since changed his opinion. All in all its a very good event, well organised and above all a great challenge, being so early in the year its also good race to do just to find out how your fitness is building up after all the Christmas & New Year indulgences. I would recommend this race to anyone looking to do a challenging 10k road race, just don't go there expecting a a PB.

Brrr-rass Monkey
18th Jan 2009
The 26th running of the Brass Monkey Half Marathon was as popular as ever. Voted best race in the country a few years ago by Runners World readers, securing a place means being quick off the mark with your entry. The total entries for the 2009 event was over 2300 and, with a maximum field size of 1500, many ended up being disappointed. On the day 1300 runners turned up to be greeted by weather which, although cold, was much kinder than had been forecast clear skies and a gentle wind from the South-West which helped the runners back home.
The reason for the popularity of the race is a combination of great organisation, excellent PB potential (the course is flatter than my singing in the shower) and many see it as a stepping-stone for the London Marathon. Being soon after Christmas it can also help to stem the mince pie intake over the festive period.
The organisation was spot on again this year and chip timing made for accurate and rapid results. A good quality rucksack was there at the end for folk once they had gathered their senses (and in some cases mustered the energy).
NYMAC had 4 runners competing. First home for NYMAC was Jim Bulman in 71-25 and a tremendous overall 4th position Jim out-sprinting Steven Bateson at the finish. Next was Richard Bellamy (2nd O40) in 75-28 followed by Martin Murray in 82-12. Our first lady home was Sharon Gaytor in 95-53 (club F40 record)
The overall winner was Matthew Pierson in 66-34 apparently he developed a blister during the race that burst at mile 12 making the last mile agony. Proof, if anyone needed reminding, that pain is inevitable but suffering is optional.
