2004 Ladies Reports

 Romping Around Rotherham
11th Dec 2004

Cath Worth (NYMAC) and Shelli Kempson (NMH) completed a 50 mile race together around Rotherham finishing 1st ladies in 9hr 2 min 34 secs. They were also a respectable 19th overall from a field of 134 starters and would have had a women's team if Kendra White (NYMAC) hadn't taken ill the night before.
Cath said of their exploits :

"We had entered as a girly team with Kendra as they never get women's team. Sadly Kendra spent Friday night being ill in the Travel Inn we stayed at and couldn't run. She followed us around the route and supplied food and helpful hints about the route. I had a horrible time as it's completely flat and I had to run continuously, and navigating via the M1 and Tesco's is a bit odd. We managed to get the ladies prize, but obviously not a team prize. - poor Kendra! Bet the Roadies would love it....

Congrats go to Kirsty - our first lady member to complete a road marathon - and the Chicago Marathon at that!

Sarah, Here are my results, and a couple of pics. There were just over 33,000 finishers, approx 14,000 women, and approx 4500 in my 'division'. The last 6 miles were really tough!. Look forward to seeing you soon at training,

Regards, Kirsty

Kirsty displayed some good even paced running despite suffering in the last 6 miles:

 Ian Hodgson Mountain Relay
3rd Oct 2004

Ian Hodgson Mountain Relay pics

North York Moors Athletics Club was formed and a Ladies Section was advertised………….
[Click to enlarge image]Regular training was organised every Wednesday from the beginning of April and the aim of the Ladies Section for the Calendar Year was to:

·        Encourage the interested ladies to represent NYMAC in the Great North Run, and
·        Enter a Ladies Team in the Ian Hodgson Relays

The membership of the Ladies Section took off and today, at least 12 ladies turn up each week to be put through their paces. Four ladies entered and finished the Great North Run which is a fantastic achievement and YES…… we entered a Ladies Team in the Ian Hodgson Relays......

After a few team changes and leg changes leading up to the event, the team was finalised and looking forward to the experience.
Sixty Five teams started in good conditions with Jo and Sarah running Leg 1. They finished just outside their predicted time and handed over to Gilly and Yvonne who worked well together to put in a solid performance on Leg 2 and finish when expected after having slid down the last hill on their bums.

Leg 3 saw the weather deteriorate requiring Cath and Caroline to be confident with their navigation. They had a[Click to enlarge image] brilliant run together and gained a number of places in the mist before handing over to Clare and Kate. By this time, the day had deteriorated and it was driving pouring rain and with very poor visibility. They supported and encouraged one another and worked really well as a team to finish with huge grins on their faces even though they suffered in the severe conditions.

Final results showed that we didn’t come last……. We came 62/65 teams and we were 5/6 ladies team.

Abiding memories and comments

·        That was hard work, but I would definitely do it again fun…………
·        Gosh this is slippery, just follow me as she launched herself down hill on her bum……..
·        I never knew fell running could be so much FUN……….
·        GO, GO, GO………
·        That was bloody grim out there……. She said with a huge grin on her face!

[Click to enlarge image]We all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are really keen to compete next year and know that we have something to aim for.

Special thanks goes to NYMAC for having faith in us and entering a Ladies Team, our supporters on the day - Rob Pollard (Official Photographer), Jill Sexton, Gina Von Bradsky, Becky Bailey, Paul Lowe and from what I could tell, all of Clare’s family and finally Cleveland Mountaineering Club for allowing us to use their well positioned club hut.

 West Highland Way Race
19th June 2004

Our long distance specialist Cath Worth had an outstanding run in the 95 mile West Highland Way race finishing 17th overall from 90 starters and 2nd lady in 22hrs 46 min.

Cath said of her run "I Had a brilliant time but should have been an hour quicker. I sort of ran out of aggression on the last stage and let 6 people pass me in the last 4 miles without caring. Can't understand it now but I must have been tired. Bob and Paddy were superb in their support and also seemed to get carried away with the excitement and the completely mad atmosphere.

First lady was Kate Jenkins, who is so phenomenal she doesn't count. She finished 3rd overall in 19hrs 36min. Anyway, a fantastic race - I would recommend it to anyone who can get their head around the distance. Finished it with another chest infection, but quite frankly I don't care!"

The West Highland Way stretches for 95 miles from Milngavie Railway Station (7 miles north of Glasgow) to Fort William and climbs a total of 11,624 ft - well done Cath!

 Darlington 10K
8th Aug 2004

We had 2 ladies in the Darlington 10K, Michaela McKenzie (50:05 an inaugural club record) and Dawn Lloyd (64:48). Well done ladies!
