CLEVELAND SURVIVAL REPORT - March 2010
By Carol Dell-Price
This was my first Cleveland Survival and as map reading is not my strongest point I was a bit apprehensive to say the least. Luckily I was running with
Lydia and Martin Dietrich so help with co ordinates and a supply of home made flapjack as at hand- no prizes for guessing who provided which.......
Perfect weather for the start and after grappling with running with a backpack for the first time the first few miles were pretty uneventful and over very familiar (and steep!) ground of Roseberry Topping and Highcliff Nab. The pace was steady, sun shining and before we knew it we had ten miles under our belt.
The middle section proved more difficult to navigate but Martin did a sterling job of keeping us on the right track and fantastic marshals with drinks at every checkpoint plus a lamb being born near Commondale kept us entertained and hydrated. However, I do have a regular habit of falling over, so much Martin calls me the 'tumbler' and true to form at around 15 miles and starting to tire I had a spectacular fall and ended up with a cut elbow and a thorough covering of mud as I slid through lots of black grunge. Not to be deterred
Lydia threw me some dextrose, found my water bottle and produced her famous flapjack and we were quickly off again. I managed to get some sympathetic looks from walkers at Gribdale but by this time the end was definitely in sight and we headed to a welcome downward stretch to
Guisborough Road.
All in all it was a great run and I would definitely do it again - unfortunately I couldn't hang around for the post race chat as I had to rush off to pick up children - complete with mud and blood - one look at me from my 8 year old and he said - 'you know other mums go to Tesco on a Saturday morning!
A big thanks to all the organisers who did a fantastic job and provided a great event.
