Kendra White was our first lady home in the Northern X/C Champs at Roundhay Park, Leeds. Kendra finished 94th overall in 33:16 (equalling her best position in the 2005 champs). Not far behind  was Karen Heppenstall in 139th in 34;54. Our men's team was decimated (including yours truly) by either work commitments or man-flu (there's nothing worse). Our sole representative was Tom Gibbons in 287th place.  (full results).

 Croft NYSD
11th Oct 2009

[Click to enlarge image]The first race of the season took place at Croft on 11th October, and we had a team of 7 men and 3 women competing. Despite being one person short of a full team, the women (Marie, Karen and Helen) did very well to take 3rd place overall in the team competition, placed 2nd, 8th and 18th respectively. The men's team placed 6th overall, with the 6 counters being Dez (12th), David (14th), Kev (28th), Mark (42nd), Trevor (63rd) and Vince (70th). Mike was the 7th runner, finishing in 88th. Full results are attached.

The next NYSD race is this Sunday, 25th October at Scarborough. Details are available on the New Marske Harriers webpage, and are also attached. I won't be there myself, but race numbers for the season are available in the registration tent. All you need to do is sign your name on the list and take a number to keep for the rest of the season. Rob, Vince, Kev and Mike know the drill and can help you out.

I have also received entry forms for the NE Championships, which this year are taking place on 12th December at Branksome School, Darlington. The Men's race is at 13:00, and there are 6 counters towards a team. The Women's race will follow at 13:55, and we need 3 counters for a team. Entries close on 13th November so if you would like to be entered please let me know by email by then. The club will cover the cost of entries to NE, Northern and National Champs. After that I will see what is left of my budget and decide whether I will need to charge you for NYSD.

I look forward to seeing most of you sometime over the season.

North York Moors AC - 2009/10 Cross Country Update

Calling all Cross Country runners,

At last the Cross Country season is upon us. The first NYSD fixture is in early October, and the calendar is looking as busy as ever this year.

Details of all the fixtures is available here

As usual, our fixtures centre around the NYSD series, but with NE Championships in Darlington and National Championships in Leeds, we have a great opportunity to race against the best in our back yard.

It would be great to see enough people out racing to make up at least one men's team and a women's team at each of the NYSD series races, plus the 3 Championship races (North Easterns, Northerns and Nationals).

If you want to race you need to be entered through the club, so if you are interested in doing any of the races, please drop me an email to karen@nym.ac

I will arrange an entry for you and for the NYSD series deliver a number to you.

I look forward to hearing from you, hardened cross country devotees and newbies alike!

Best wishes,

Karen Poole

 Racecourse Finale
15th Mar 2009

Start of the Senior Men's race. Photo by Jill Sexton

The disused Richmond Racecourse was the venue for the final race of the NYSD Cross-Country series attracting the cream of local runners. On a fine spring like day the Senior men's race was won by Tom Bean (York) ahead of Gary Dunn (T&S) and Richard Hunt (R&Z). Carolyn Summersgill (M&C) was a comfortable winner of the senior ladies race ahead of Angharad Owen (Loftus & Whitby) and Helena Scofield (Scarborough).

North York Moors AC had four representatives in the senior men's race namely Rob Pollard (25th) , Lee Baines (69th), Mike Shaw (74th) and Jeff Belf (DNF).

The 4th race in the NYSD Cross-Country Series (hosted by M&C) took place at Acklam Grange School where competitors faced icy conditions under foot. Alec Duffield (No. 63 above, Loftus & Whitby) was an impressive winner of the Senior Men's race ahead of Gary Dunn (T&S) and Lewis Gamble Thompson (NMH, No. 467) while Carolyn Summersgill (M&C) ran away with the Senior Ladies race ahead of Tracey Waller (HBR) and Angharad Owen (Loftus & Whitby). The various age and gender races offered excellent competition (and value for money :-) with many top local runners taking part. Where else would you get track, road and fell runners competing in the same race?

Against the odds we managed to field a full team in the 5th NYSD Cross-Country meeting at Caedmon School, Whitby.  In the Senior Men's race Andrew Pearson was our first counter in 17th place overall with Rob Pollard and Richard Clark hot on his heels. Loftus & Whitby's Alec Duffield was once again an easy winner in the senior men's race  over a minute ahead of guest runner Robert Cole. In the Senior Women's race our Kendra White finished a respectable 9th overall behind race winner Carolyn Summersgill.

Cross-country may not be everyone's cup of tea but hey there's a credit crunch on, so why pay £12 for a single race when you can do a whole series for just £5? The various age and gender categories offer excellent competition too with many top local runners taking part so why not give them a try?

P.S. Hats off to the Billingham Marsh House Harriers who ran just to gain their team valuable points after
earlier taking part in The Brass Monkey Half-Marathon!

The women's race gets underway. Our Karen Poole (black vest finished a commendable 11th overall)

The 3rd race in the NYSD Cross-Country Series (hosted by New Marske Harriers) took place at the Flatts Lane Country Park. The venue proved to be a huge success with "proper cross-country" courses on offer for all. An example was the senior men's course which had 920 ft of climbing over it's 9.8Km length i.e. more than some local "Fell" races :-).  The races offer excellent competition and value for money - why not give them a try?

Well we managed to scrape a men's team together for the first NYSD X/C meeting at Croft Aerodrome on the undulating
course despite the pundits forecasts. Yours truly managed to overhaul Kev on the final lap while Jeff secured our 3rd spot just ahead of Vince.

N.B. A special thanks go to Paul who came along to spectate after training in the morning but was "cajoled" into running
to make the team up.

The next meeting is at Summerhill, Hartlepool (a testing little course), so lets see if we can muster up a full team again!

It was swings and roundabouts for our members in The 2008 National Cross-Country Championships at Alton Towers however all seemed to enjoy themselves. Paul & Vince kindly report back....

"Great course, pity we were one short of a man's team.  Undulating, firm in places, heavy going in others (especially the half mile to the finish) and with a whopper of a hill on each lap. Absolutely wonderful atmosphere - pity it's in the South next year.  There's a great picture of the senior men's start at www.englishcrosscountry.co.uk/

Also I note from the website that the record for an M50 in the Nationals is, or rather was, a pedestrian 864th by a certain P Connor.  So I'll claim that with my massive (?) improvement, just to annoy him. And Karen seems to have set a Women's record.

A couple of more thoughts - this week's AW says the quality was high and that "A win in the Metropolitan League got you 132nd here, second place in the Surrey Champs translated to 137th.” So Paul, you did pretty well considering!

Secondly, see you at Parliament Hill (you got it, it has a hill, but nothing like last weekend's) on 21 Feb 2009 all being well. Another classic course, eh Paul?

I think that was my 15th National, but my first for 12 years. Some good pix and write-ups in AW, including an editorial that quotes Shaun Purkiss!!

Cheers, Vince Rutland"

--------o0o-------

"I agree with Vince that it was a great course. Especially looking back now after a few days. All I can remember while I was doing it was “this is a pain in the backside, legs, lungs, arms, in fact, everywhere! “ What a killer of a hill. Weather was ideal for runners and spectators - slight wind and mild. I think I'll enter next years race for the first time!

Our senior men's team finished an impressive 4th overall and top local club in the North East Cross Country Championships at Summerhill, Hartlepool. On a cold, wet day and on a muddy, hilly (i.e. proper cross-country) course Nathaniel Williams led the team home, finishing in 13th place ahead of Paul Lowe (17th), Richard Bellamy (31st), Jonathan Skidmore (55th), Rob Pollard (70th) and Paul Figg (87th). We also fielded a full 2nd men's team consisting of Richard Fawcett (93rd), Tom Gibbons (100th), Jeff Belt (149th), Trevor moss (151st), Chris Poole (160th) and Paul McGough (161st).

Bob stood right in front of the BBC camera to ensure he appeared on national TV, it didn't matter
whether or not he was in the correct race ...

After a 10 year absence International Cross-Country returned to Gateshead and representing North York Moors AC was
none other than Bob Firth who finished an excellent 2nd in the over 55 category and on a demanding course.

The 3rd NYSD Cross-Country race at the Flatts Lane Country Park produced some great racing on tough courses and in fine weather. Despite the clash with one of our target road races we still managed to field a team with Richard Bellamy again our top placed senior man in 6th place overall. Together with Roger Tomlin (14th), Kevin McLoughlin (44th), Ian Glover (48th), Paul McGough (61st) and Jeff Belt (68th) the team finished in 5th place overall.

The Senior men's race was won by Dominic Shaw (NMH) ahead of Andy Wiles (Mbro AC) while the Senior Women's race saw perfect pace judgement by Tracy Waller (HBR) who moved through the field to claim victory ahead of junior Jess Russon (NMH) and Johanna Jackson (M&C).

 Cross-Country's Back!
7th Oct 2007

North York Moors AC fielded a motley crew of 7 runners at the first of the 2007/8 NYSD X/C at Summerhill, Hartlepool. Despite the persistent [Click to enlarge image]drizzle ground conditions were dry, but if the mud didn't slow you down on this course then the three hill climbs per lap on the Senior Men's course should have (3 laps in total = 9km).

Many would regard Summerhill as a true X/C course but the hills didn't seem to represent much of a problem for Richard Bellamy who pulled through the strong field to finish an excellent 5th in 32 min 2 secs. Next NYM runner home was Jonathan Skidmore (19th) just holding back triathlon rival Andy Hardy, then Vince Rutland (54th), Nick Simmon (57th), Paul McGough (72nd), Trevor Moss (87th) and freshly back from retirement Graham Tyerman in 101st. North York Moors AC finished an excellent 5th place out of 11 in the team result, but with many of our top runners missing something we can improve on. The Senior Men's Race was won by Gary Dunne (T&S) while Teesdale's Claire Robson was victor in the Senior Women's race.

cheers

 NE Cross-Country Champs 2007 - Teams needed
Saturday 8th December 2007

Dear NYM members, This year the North Eastern Cross Country Championships are being held at Summerhill, Hartlepool on Saturday 8th December. This is a big high-profile event with stacks of good runners taking part - we are lucky to have the race practically on our doorstep this year.

Senior Mens Championship (12k) starts at 1.00pm - individuals and first six for team scorers
Senior Women Championship (8k) go off at 1.55pm - individuals and first 3 for team scorers

For those who ran at Summerhill last Sunday in the NYSD league it's the same excellent cross country course (plenty of hills, plenty of mud, cracking views of Hartlepools suburbs), only longer.

Entry is free. All entries for NYM.AC must be first claim membership. Club colours must be worn.

I will coordinate entries on behalf of the club so if you would like to run please let me know ASAP as entries close shortly. I will be bitterly disappointed if we don't manage at least 2 mens teams and a womens team.

For more details of the venue see www.sunnysummerhill.com

(I get it, make anywhere sound appealing by sticking "sunny" in front of it)

Any queries feel free to get in touch.

 NE Cross-Country Champs
9th Dec 2006

North York Moors A.C. were pleased to have a full men's team in the NE Cross Country Championships at Herrington Country Park, Sunderland, albeit a motley one at that. The 12Km course, held in the shadow of the Penshaw Monument proved to be a proper cross-country one with plenty of hills and mud for competitors to enjoy in the icy cold conditions. The team finished 1st in the knobbly knees competition and 19th in the race, 2 places ahead of M&C.

Photo courtesy of Jill Sexton shows (L-R) Ken Farrell (245th, 63:12), Jeff Belt (218th, 59:40), Rob Pollard (77th, 51:00), Peter Connor (164th, 55:48), Jonathon Skidmore (97th, 52:10), Nick Simmons (170th, 55:58) and Paul ("I like Cross-Country!") McGough (201st, 58:23). (Lots more photos to come soon). Diane Jobson was our sole female representative in the 8.5 Km Senior women's race, finishing  a creditable 36th overall.

Report from X/C Manager:

"North York Moors AC fielded 8 senior and veteran runners on a bright but chilly day at the North Eastern Counties AA Cross Country Championships held at Herrington Country Park. The men's 12k course consisted of 3 laps with enough climbs and sticky mud to make it feel twice the distance. The Tyne and Wear clubs dominated a quality field with M Hood of Sunderland Harriers finishing 1st. An over enthusiastic Jonathan Skidmore surrendered the lead to on in-form Rob Pollard who edged away on the 2nd lap and took first place for the club finishing in 77th place. Jonathan finished just over a minute later in 97th. Next home for NYM.AC was an unusually injury free Peter Connor in 164th closely followed by recently injured Nick Simmons in 170th. Paul McGough blamed his performance of 201st on his recent pumping iron stating that his increased weight made him sink in the soft mud. Jeff Belt and Ken Farrell finished 218th and 245th respectively, good performances given the high quality field. Sunderland Harriers went on to win the men#s team event and NYM.AC stamped their mark on the team event being 19th team out of 24th overall.

[Click to enlarge image]Diane Jobson was our only female representative in the 8km women's event finishing in a very commendable 36th place. Unusually the women's race took place after the mens and the recent wet weather and 3 laps by 300 odd men made the course a very boggy challenge for the poor lady's. The womens race was led by a quality field and was won by F Murray of Chester-le-Street a clear minute and a half of the Darlington Harriers trio who finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th easily picking up the team prize."

Please let me know if you wish to race by Monday 6th November at the very latest and I will submit an entry on behalf of the club. Entry fees will be covered by the club. For those considering junior categories your category is based on your age on 1st September 2006. For seniors your age must exceed 20 years on 1st September 2006. Other cross-country races for your diary:

10th March 2007 English National Cross Country Championships, Herrington Country Park, Penshaw (note - to race as a Senior you must have entered the North of England AA Cross-Country Championships, other age groups can enter direct)

24th February 2007 Inter-Counties Championships, Nottingham

Please don't forget North York Moors AC is registered in the local NYSD Cross-Country league. All levels of runners very welcome. Fixtures are this website. We need 4 runners in each category for a team result. If you wish to race simply turn up and I will allocate you a race number. Once you have your number, keep this for the duration of the NYSD season and at future races simply just turn up and race. Senior woman races start around 1.30pm and senior men around 2pm.

If you have any other queries on XC matters then let me know.

18th Feb 2006

[Click to enlarge image]Despite the best efforts of Joe Blackett and myself only 2 club members (from 7 entries) turned out for the Veterans NE X/C Champs. at Darlington. Joe finished in a respectable 4th place in the M40 class in 33:07, 3 mins behind winner Brian Rushworth (Sunderland). Also competing in the M40 class was Andy Tapp who finished 16th in 40:34 (if 2 more M40 club members had turned out they would have won at least a Bronze medal as only 2 complete teams finished - boo hoo!).

If you would like to run the NYSD events simply turn up on the day and get a number from me, if you drop me an e-mail before hand I’ll look out for you. Senior races start at approx 1:00 pm

North Eastern Harrier League also put on 6 races:

These races are handicapped, that is all runners are divided into smaller groups of similar ability the ‘slowest’ group sets of first and the ‘fast’ group sets of last. This system means that all runners have a similar chance of winning the event. Race distances are approx the same as for the NYSD races. First event starts at 12:30 pm, the venues are:

  • Chester-Le-Street (Riverside) – Sunday 30 October 2005

  • Blaydon (Shibdon Park) – Sunday 27 November 2005

  • Sunderland (Farringdon) – Saturday 7 January 2006

  • Saltwell (Edmond Campion School, Wrekenton) – Saturday 4 February 2006

  • Blackhill (Berry Edge, Consett) – Saturday 18 March 2006

  • Tynedale (Prudhoe High School) – Saturday 1 April 2006

If you would like to run the Harriers League races send me an e-mail (paul@nym.ac) and I will forward you a number.

Championship Events

There are 3 championship events:

  • North Eastern Championship on Saturday 10 December at Willington, County Durham.
  • North of England Championship on Saturday 28 January at Blackburn.
  • English National Championships on Saturday 25 February at London.

All the championship races are approx 12 km for the men and 8km for the women.

The NYM Committee have agreed to provide limited funds to be used by the Cross Country Manager. This money will be used to subsidise the cost of entering a team for the National. For those who haven’t raced the national in previous years, it’s an event that is definitely worth doing. A mass start of about 2000 and 500 runners in the men’s and women’s race respectively, is an experience that you will not forget….!

There is a huge range of ability in the race (Peter Connor ran it last year) so don’t think that its only for the faster members of the club. Regardless of your fitness level, if you enjoy cross country running the Nationals is a must…! It’s worth mentioning that to run the National you have to be entered for the Northern’s, regardless if you run or not.

If you would like to run any of the Championship events let me know ASAP (for North Eastern’s I need to know by end October) either in person or via e-mail (paul@nym.ac).

I would like to see as many NYM vests racing at both local and championship events, if you have never competed at cross country now is a great time to start….!

 Richmond Cross-Country
6th Mar 2005

After being postponed by a week due to recent snow, the final NYSD Cross-Country meeting took place at Richmond. Paul Lowe (centre) won the Senior Men's event on an 8.6Km course he admittedly enjoys. Paul clocked 31:41 just 7 seconds ahead of veteran Jonathon Orange (left).  Photo (courtesy of Robin Rutherford) shows a pained Rob Cole desperate to finish within 2 places of Paul in order to at least tie with him for the Senior Men's title. Rob actually finished 3rd but as Jonathon was classed as a veteran, Rob won the Senior Men's title outright for the first time. Jonathon's performance in this race poses the question that "even if he (or any veteran runner) had won every race would they still only be classified as the "V1 Mens" category winner?" Maybe the 'Senior Mens'  and 'Senior Ladies' categories should really be 'Open' i.e. include everyone regardless of age (as happens in the local fell races) to determine an overall champion?

Discuss this and other hot topics in our new forum - open to everyone!

Paul: "We had four runners turn up at Richmond: myself, Joe, Peter and Vic. It was a nice sunny day, if not a little chilly! The course was very run-able considering recent snow falls. I won from Jon Orange (he ran very well) and then Rob Cole, we had a good battle but I managed to get a gap going onto the last lap to win by approx 50 metres. Of our members, Joe finished next (15th) then Vic (20th) and then Peter (38th) who managed to hold off Graham Bell at the finish - and even managed a gallop....life in the old dog yet!

 Northern Cross-Country Champs
29th Jan 2005

Despite several key members missing, we managed to field a senior team in The 2005 Northern Cross Country Championships at Berry Edge, Consett (Darlington Harriers were the only other local club to manage this). Here's Peter's report:

Conditions were surprisingly good, - mild sunny weather and with one or two exceptions underfoot conditions were softish but not deep mud. First mention must be made of our sole womens representative, Kendra White, who ran in the senior event over a distance of 8K.  She finished a commendable 94th out of a field of 166.  A great effort, even more so without the help of other team members. Here’s hoping we can have a full womens team in next years event following Kendra’s example.
We had a team of eight in the senior mens event ran over a four lap course covering a  distance of 12K. Joe Blackett was first home for us, finishing in 141st position (46:54). He was closely followed by Alan Harland in 155th (47:14). Garry Burnip, (someone must have cut their umbilical cord), came in third behind Alan in 232nd (49:23). Paul Godley, fading after contesting the lead for the first fifty metres came in 257th (50:05). Rob Pollard, clearly “up” for this race, also finished in the first three hundred, coming in 293rd (51:19). Vic Brudenell, having his first race for twenty one months, was the final team counter in 333rd (52:18). Peter Connor, recently recovered from a recurring bout of malaria, valiantly came home in 403rd (55:03).The ever reliable Barry Moody, was our final finisher in 526th (62:56). In the team event we finished 21st out of 53 teams. A magnificent effort by all. in this, our first Northern Cross Country Championships.

 National X/C Championships
19th Feb 2005

We were proud to have 2 representatives in the National Cross-country Championships at Birmingham. Paul Lowe had a good run but was disappointed not to make the top 100 when he finished 102nd in 42:10 while Peter Connor (on yet another come-back trail) continues to improve and made the top 1000, finishing 864th in 52:31.  Ex Kenyan member David Gitau (now living and working down 'sarf') finished 76th in 41:29. The race was won by Glynn Tromans of Coventry & Godiva Harriers in 37:53 .

 Scaife's King of the Castle
24th Oct 2004

Martin Scaife was a convincing winner of the Senior Men's race at Barnard Castle in the first of the NYSD Cross-Country Meetings. Martin cruised round the tough 10Km course in 29:49, 26 seconds ahead of Scarborough's Daniel Agustus, with M'bro's Rob Cole in 3rd place.
NYMAC's Paul Lowe was 4th making it a good start for the club in our very first cross-country event since the clubs formation in February. (We would have had more members competing but we only joined  the NYSD league four days before this event took place!).
North York Moors AC are also affiliated to the NE Harrier League and we look forward to fielding competitors in that league too.
