The disused Richmond Racecourse was the venue for the final race of the NYSD Cross-Country series attracting the cream of local runners. On a fine spring like day the Senior men's race was won by Tom Bean (York) ahead of Gary Dunn (T&S) and Richard Hunt (R&Z). Carolyn Summersgill (M&C) was a comfortable winner of the senior ladies race ahead of Angharad Owen (Loftus & Whitby) and Helena Scofield (Scarborough). North York Moors AC had four representatives in the senior men's race namely Rob Pollard (25th) , Lee Baines (69th), Mike Shaw (74th) and Jeff Belf (DNF). Richmond X/C Provisional Results (link)

Against the odds we managed to field a full team in the 5th NYSD Cross-Country meeting at Caedmon School, Whitby. In the Senior Men's race Andrew Pearson was our first counter in 17th place overall with Rob Pollard and Richard Clark hot on his heels. Loftus & Whitby's Alec Duffield was once again an easy winner in the senior men's race over a minute ahead of guest runner Robert Cole. In the Senior Women's race our Kendra White finished a respectable 9th overall behind race winner Carolyn Summersgill.

The 3rd race in the NYSD Cross-Country Series (hosted by New Marske Harriers) took place at the Flatts Lane Country Park. The venue proved to be a huge success with "proper cross-country" courses on offer for all. An example was the senior men's course which had 920 ft of climbing over it's 9.8Km length i.e. more than some local "Fell" races :-). The races offer excellent competition and value for money - why not give them a try? Flatts Lane X/C results (link)

at Alton Towers
23rd Feb 2008
--------o0o------- It was swings and roundabouts for our members in The 2008 National Cross-Country Championships at Alton Towers however all seemed to enjoy themselves. Paul & Vince kindly report back.... "Great course, pity we were one short of a man's team. Undulating, firm in places, heavy going in others (especially the half mile to the finish) and with a whopper of a hill on each lap. Absolutely wonderful atmosphere - pity it's in the South next year. There's a great picture of the senior men's start at www.englishcrosscountry.co.uk/ Also I note from the website that the record for an M50 in the Nationals is, or rather was, a pedestrian 864th by a certain P Connor. So I'll claim that with my massive (?) improvement, just to annoy him. And Karen seems to have set a Women's record. A couple of more thoughts - this week's AW says the quality was high and that "A win in the Metropolitan League got you 132nd here, second place in the Surrey Champs translated to 137th.” So Paul, you did pretty well considering! Secondly, see you at Parliament Hill (you got it, it has a hill, but nothing like last weekend's) on 21 Feb 2009 all being well. Another classic course, eh Paul? I think that was my 15th National, but my first for 12 years. Some good pix and write-ups in AW, including an editorial that quotes Shaun Purkiss!! Cheers, Vince Rutland" --------o0o------- "I agree with Vince that it was a great course. Especially looking back now after a few days. All I can remember while I was doing it was “this is a pain in the backside, legs, lungs, arms, in fact, everywhere! “ What a killer of a hill. Weather was ideal for runners and spectators - slight wind and mild. I think I'll enter next years race for the first time! Check out these links for photos of the race: www.mickhall-photos.com/eos/galleries/ncx08seniormen/index.htm www.mickhall-photos.com/eos/galleries/ncx08seniorwomen/index.htm I had a quick scan through and spotted Paul L = dis2158, Skiddy = dis2480 (walking up the steep hill), Rob Cole = dis2618 Regards Paul McGough" --------o0o------- North York Moors AC results: Senior Women: 81 Rob Cole (2nd claim) 35:38 2008 National Cross-Country Championships Full Results (link) --------o0o-------

Cross-Country's Back!
7th Oct 2007 North York Moors AC fielded a motley crew of 7 runners at the first of the 2007/8 NYSD X/C at Summerhill, Hartlepool. Despite the persistent Many would regard Summerhill as a true X/C course but the hills didn't seem to represent much of a problem for Richard Bellamy who pulled through the strong field to finish an excellent 5th in 32 min 2 secs. Next NYM runner home was Jonathan Skidmore (19th) just holding back triathlon rival Andy Hardy, then Vince Rutland (54th), Nick Simmon (57th), Paul McGough (72nd), Trevor Moss (87th) and freshly back from retirement Graham Tyerman in 101st. North York Moors AC finished an excellent 5th place out of 11 in the team result, but with many of our top runners missing something we can improve on. The Senior Men's Race was won by Gary Dunne (T&S) while Teesdale's Claire Robson was victor in the Senior Women's race. cheers Jonathan Skidmore Full Summerhill X/C Results (link) P.S. NE Cross-Country Champs
9th Dec 2006
North York Moors A.C. were pleased to have a full men's team in the NE Cross Country Championships at Herrington Country Park, Sunderland, albeit a motley one at that. The 12Km course, held in the shadow of the Penshaw Monument proved to be a proper cross-country one with plenty of hills and mud for competitors to enjoy in the icy cold conditions. The team finished 1st in the knobbly knees competition and 19th in the race, 2 places ahead of M&C. Photo courtesy of Jill Sexton shows (L-R) Ken Farrell (245th, 63:12), Jeff Belt (218th, 59:40), Rob Pollard (77th, 51:00), Peter Connor (164th, 55:48), Jonathon Skidmore (97th, 52:10), Nick Simmons (170th, 55:58) and Paul ("I like Cross-Country!") McGough (201st, 58:23). (Lots more photos to come soon). Diane Jobson was our sole female representative in the 8.5 Km Senior women's race, finishing a creditable 36th overall. Report from X/C Manager:
"North York Moors AC fielded 8 senior
and veteran runners on a bright but chilly day at the North Eastern Counties
AA Cross Country Championships held at Herrington Country Park. The men's
12k course consisted of 3 laps with enough climbs and sticky mud to make it
feel twice the distance. The Tyne and Wear clubs dominated a quality field
with M Hood of Sunderland Harriers finishing 1st. An over enthusiastic
Jonathan Skidmore surrendered the lead to on in-form Rob Pollard who edged
away on the 2nd lap and took first place for the club finishing in 77th
place. Jonathan finished just over a minute later in 97th. Next home for
NYM.AC was an unusually injury free Peter Connor in 164th closely followed
by recently injured Nick Simmons in 170th. Paul McGough blamed his
performance of 201st on his recent pumping iron stating that his increased
weight made him sink in the soft mud. Jeff Belt and Ken Farrell finished
218th and 245th respectively, good performances given the high quality
field. Sunderland Harriers went on to win the men#s team event and NYM.AC
stamped their mark on the team event being 19th team out of 24th overall. NE X/C Champs 2006 results (link) 31 photos from 2006 NE X/C Champs

North York Moors AC - 2005/6 Cross Country Update The dark, cold winter nights are looming and that can only mean one thing – cross country running is back, nothing quite like running round a muddy field to cleanse the soul..! Here is a basic guide to the forthcoming season: There are various local races and 3 larger championship events. Local Races: North Yorkshire & South Durham League (NYSD) put on 6 races: The men’s course is approx 8 km and the ladies is approx 5 km. The venues are:
If you would like to run the NYSD events simply turn up on the day and get a number from me, if you drop me an e-mail before hand I’ll look out for you. Senior races start at approx 1:00 pm North Eastern Harrier League also put on 6 races: These races are handicapped, that is all runners are divided into smaller groups of similar ability the ‘slowest’ group sets of first and the ‘fast’ group sets of last. This system means that all runners have a similar chance of winning the event. Race distances are approx the same as for the NYSD races. First event starts at 12:30 pm, the venues are:
If you would like to run the Harriers League races send me an e-mail (paul@nym.ac) and I will forward you a number. Championship EventsThere are 3 championship events:
All the championship races are approx
12 km for the men and 8km for the women. Paul Lowe |

Richmond Cross-Country 6th Mar 2005
Discuss this and other hot topics in our new forum - open to everyone! Paul: "We had four runners turn up at Richmond: myself, Joe, Peter and Vic. It was a nice sunny day, if not a little chilly! The course was very run-able considering recent snow falls. I won from Jon Orange (he ran very well) and then Rob Cole, we had a good battle but I managed to get a gap going onto the last lap to win by approx 50 metres. Of our members, Joe finished next (15th) then Vic (20th) and then Peter (38th) who managed to hold off Graham Bell at the finish - and even managed a gallop....life in the old dog yet! |

29th Jan 2005
Conditions were
surprisingly good, - mild sunny weather and with one or two exceptions
underfoot conditions were softish but not deep mud. First mention must be
made of our sole womens representative, Kendra White, who ran in the
senior event over a distance of 8K. She finished a commendable 94th out
of a field of 166. A great effort, even more so without the help of other
team members. Here’s hoping we can have a full womens team in next years
event following Kendra’s example. Peter Connor Photo shows (left

stockings, Joe Blackett, Vic Brudenell, Rob Pollard, Garry Burnip, Alan

National
X/C Championships 19th Feb 2005 We were proud to have 2 representatives in the National Cross-country Championships at Birmingham. Paul Lowe had a good run but was disappointed not to make the top 100 when he finished 102nd in 42:10 while Peter Connor (on yet another come-back trail) continues to improve and made the top 1000, finishing 864th in 52:31. Ex Kenyan member David Gitau (now living and working down 'sarf') finished 76th in 41:29. The race was won by Glynn Tromans of Coventry & Godiva Harriers in 37:53 . |
