Bransdale Fell Race Report

The National Trust Brandale Fell Race - 10th August 2010

A few months ago Tom Watson of Knavesmire Harriers and I decided to have a go at organising a fell race. We both work for the National Trust and thought it would be a good way to raise a bit of money to fund conservation work in the North York Moors as well as bring a few people out to Bransdale - one of the less visited parts of the national park. Not everything went smoothly in the run up to the event. I was away for a couple of weeks for my summer holiday and while I was away Tom was found be have a serious illness and was taken to hospital. We did consider cancelling all together, but in the end decided not to as we had put so much effort in.

On the day my main worry was that we wouldn't have many participants. Although Bransdale is a beautiful part of the world, it isn't the easiest place to get to, especially from the north. I needn't have worried - 47 runners turned out, not bad for the inaugral event. This included seven runners from NYMAC and twelve from Knavesmire – thanks for your support.

The race began with a tough climb from Bransdale Mill up to Bransdale Ridge before traversing Bilsdale East Moor over to Bonfield Gill. As it was the first event I had tried to ensure the course was well marked, but the descent back into the dale via an abandoned farm house had a couple of the runners take a wrong turn. Happily everyone eventually made it back into the dale for juice and homemade cakes at the mill. A fine reward!

First home was Joe Blackett of Dark Peak Fell Runners in a time of 56:38 followed closely by Lizzie Adams of Knavesmire Harriers in 56:42. I'm sure Lizzie's time will prove very hard to beat as the ladies record.

John Sergison led home the NYMAC runners in 65:12 and 17th place. Other runners from the club were Ian Hodgeson (25th), Christopher Wright (26th), Eddie Meehan (33rd), Diane Jobson (35th), Barry Moody (39th) and Josie Lefevre (41st).

A special thanks is due to the staff from the National Trust who gave up their time to help out on the night. It's a real shame that Tom couldn't be there to see what a successful event he had organised. We all hope that he will be back to full fitness in time to organise next year's run! I will add photos from the event to my Flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/7636020@N06/

Finishing Times

This was the 2nd running of the challenge from Bankfoot. This year 23 runners took part and there were many notable performances. This was a family affair with the Roberts family taking the honours. Brian was 22 seconds ahead of Jamie at the mile mark and Jamie closed in slightly on Brian, finishing 16 seconds behind. The weather had been forecast as showery however it was a warm and slightly overcast evening making conditions prefect. The course was very dry and fast as can be seen from the times. Comparing last year's time most who competed last year were much quicker. Given that the 'mile' mark was about 30m short last year this year's comparative times were a fair bit faster. Special mention goes to Mark Potter who was trying so hard the he physically vomited on the uphill section. Ladies honours went to Di Jobson who was 1st at the mile mark and 1st over the finish line. Runner up was Jayne Parkin, both new to the event - well done. Thanks to all the runners, including the FOUR ladies, for turning out and hopefully enjoying the event. Everone responded favourably to the experience. Special thanks go to marshals John Wood, Bob Howe, Ken Wilson, Mike Woolley, Ian Shotliff, Caroline Pollard, Angie Went and Sophie Hodgson. See you next year? Bill Pennell & Steve Hutchinson.

P.S. After last years confirmation of the short 'mile' the new mark has been confirmed by a surveyor's wheel so Brian is now the official uphill mile record holder - sorry Jim.

Report Coming Soon!

A great club turn out for our first championship race – a total of 29 NYM runners took part – 23 of whom entered the club championships. For those that didn’t there’s no charge to enter and there is a prize to the winner at the end of the competition.

Some good performances too given the cold, blustery conditions. Impressive handicap times also, 15 out of 23 were within 30 seconds of their predicted finishing times. Farthest out was Barry Moody (+190 seconds) but that was down to me as I wouldn’t accept his 50 minutes and gave him 47’ instead. However, his daughter Josie made up for that by winning the women’s section being 15 seconds under. Good to see new members Petra and Vicky picking up points in the women’s section. Winner of the men’s section was Stephen Kelleher who was on the maximum 30 seconds under, finishing in 46’00. I think that could be a first time 10k for Stephen, so well done. It was a first timer for Paul Levett who finished in a respectable 42’11.

Nice to see Richard Bellamy back after a long absence and in his usual style he finished the second half of the race strongly to finish in 34’43. Jim “Bully” Bulman, though suffering from a cold, still flew the flag for us and led the team winners home in 33’16, with Alisdair Tatham (34’17) and Richard supporting him. We didn’t get the ladies team but Jayne Parkin picked up a nice prize for third lady home in 43’00. A special mention for Eddie Meehan who finished 18 seconds under handicap in 43’42 – he completed the Vienna marathon in April.

Note – on the results “DIS” refers to those disqualified due to being more than 30 seconds under predicted finish time.

Again, an excellent NYM perforamce and thanks to all taking part.

n.b. if anyone has a query on the results please let me know – it is possible I have missed  some ones handicap time. It can easily be up dated.

 Goat Fell

Jonathan Skidmore

I’m just back from a long weekend on the Isle of Arran where I did the Goat Fell race on Saturday.  Goat Fell is the highest peak on Arran at 2890 feet.  The race starts in Brodick at sea level and the first couple of miles are fast on road.  Then the assent starts!  Watch measured 9.67 miles total.  Legs still hurt today.  Think I was about 15th to the top but the real skill with these races is your ability to descend rapidly across steep slopes and boulders.  Being a wuss and having a tight IT band I had to hop and stumble across the steepest bits.   Still a great race.
